Doctor Peters knocked lightly on Colonel Mitchell’s door. He waited for the bark to enter then stuck his head in. “I’m not interrupting anything?”

“Come in, Doc.” Mitchell waved him in. “I guess you’ve heard that we’re in stand down?”

Evan shook his head. “No, sir, I hadn’t.” He cleared his throat. “But I did catch Mr. Thorn’s act on television.” He sighed heavily and stepped closer, handing him a thick file folder.

“What’s this?”

“I think I’ve figured out how they augmented the Titans.” He sat down gingerly and searched Mitchell’s face while he flipped through the data.

“What am I looking at?”

“The…uh….wendigos that we encountered?” He leaned forward and pulled out a printout. “This is their genetic code. It’s become standard practice to map the DNA of new species and…” He caught himself and blew his breath out hard.

“Just spill it, Doc.” Mitchell stared at him expectantly.

“Whoever revived these men used wendigo DNA to enhance their strength and agility.” He pointed to the DNA profile. “I don’t know how they extracted these particular gene sequences, but they did.”

Mitchell ground his teeth. “So they not only knew about them, but they were utilizing them as…what? Spare parts for their super soldiers?”

“Not exactly, but close.” Evan stood and reached for the file. He pulled out the DNA markers of Blake Tisdale’s genetic sequence. “If you look here, these genes are shared by the wendigos and the Titan that was brought here. These genes simply do not occur in humans.” He looked up at the man. “Ever.”

Mitchell sat back and stared at the two printouts. “But the creatures we battled weren’t as large as these Titans grew.”

Evan shook his head. “I can only assume that it was a side effect of the gene therapy. Because these genes aren’t present in humans, they couldn’t have known that they’d cause them to grow so large.” He sighed and sat back down. “Because of this growth, I checked Mr. Tisdale’s heart.”

Mitchell glanced up. “Let me guess…”

Evan nodded. “It is so enlarged that he could drop dead at any moment.”

Mitchell set the papers down and rubbed at his chin. “Does he know?”

“No, sir.” Evan cleared his throat again. “I told him that I’d try to find a way to reverse the effects of…” He looked up at him and shook his head. “Even if I could, the damage to his heart is irreparable.”

Mitchell leaned forward, his eyes narrowing. “What of the Titans?”

Evan nodded. “I can only assume that they would suffer from enlarged hearts as well.” He shrugged. “Considering that they were dead before this all started, perhaps the people in charge considered them a renewable resource?”

“Or they just don’t care.” Mitchell closed the file and handed it back to Evan. “I don’t suppose you found anything out that we can use against the Titans?”

Evan shook his head. “No, but the men brought back a container filled with a green, viscous fluid. I believe it acted as a synthetic amniotic fluid. The properties that it contains are actually quite remarkable.”

“How so?”

“One drop can heal a cut nearly instantly.
